Snacking has become part of our culture. However, heavily processed foods are also a burden on our digestive system and health. A healthy homemade snack with a high taste factor can help you avoid unnecessary processed foods. The 3 dals in this snack with a little bit of rice make for a protein rich and balanced food that can be enjoyed by all ages at any time and in any season.
Preparation time: approx. 30 min
Soaking time: 5 hours
Serves approx. 4-5 persons
INGREDIENTS
- Mung dal – 150g
- Chana dal – 75g
- Udid dal – 10g
- Rice – 90g
- Green chilli paste – 5g
- Salt –10g
- Coriander leaves, fresh & finely cut – 10g
- Tomato, finely chopped – 20g
- Onion, finely cut (optional) – 10g
PREPARATION
- Soak all the grains in one pot together in cold water that is twice the volume of all the grains. The grains should be properly covered with water for approximately 5 hours.
- Grind the soaked grains together into a batter, in an electric grinder. Keep the batter aside for 2-3 hours. The grain batter should have the consistency of a pan cake batter. While it can also be used immediately after grinding, the Dhirdi will become more fluffy if the dough can rest at room temperature for 2 hours.
- Add freshly chopped coriander leaves, chilli paste, salt, finely chopped tomatoes and onions (optional) to the batter and mix thoroughly.
- Heat an iron tawa (gridle) and evenly spread a little oil over it. Pour 1 ladle of batter on the tava, and spread it out. The size of each dhirdi should be about 10-12 cm diameter and 0.5 cm thick.
- Turn over and roast the dhirdi on both sides until slightly golden brown.
- Serve hot with coconut chutney or tomato sauce for a delicious snack.
