Ginger is one of the most widely used kitchen spices all over the world. Ginger has a special place in Ayurveda and is popularly known as the ‘vishwa-aushadh’ or ‘ universal medicine’ for all types of ailments. Ginger root is readily available in the market, and can also be easily grown in a small pot at your home. It is renowned as a home remedy for an array of digestive disturbances. It alleviates pain and imparts mobility in arthritis and is safe to use for children, the elderly and also during pregnancy.

For headache, common cold and sinus-ailments
Rub a piece of sonth (dry ginger) on moistened stone to make a fine paste. Warm up a sufficient amount and apply on the forehead and sinus areas. Keep for 10 to 15 minutes and gently wash off for instant relief.
For joint pains, sprains and blunt injuries
Apply dry ginger paste over the affected area to help reduce the pain as well as the inflammation.
For disturbed appetite and indigestion
Eat a small piece of fresh ginger with rock salt at the beginning of the meal for a good appetite, proper secretion of digestive juices and good digestion. It also helps to stimulate the taste buds allowing one to enjoy the real taste of the food.
For abdominal pain caused by indigestion
Mix 1 teaspoon fresh ginger juice and 1 teaspoon honey and ingest.
In case of heaviness in the abdomen, discomfort due to gas, bloating etc, taking the following mixture. 1 teaspoon ginger juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, quarter teaspoon cumin powder and quarter teaspoon black salt.
For low blood pressure-hypotension
Sipping on ginger tea gives instant relief. Keep a cup of water on the stove, add 1 teaspoon of grated ginger and 1 teaspoon of stone sugar, boil for 2-3 minutes, cover with a lid and turn off the flame. After 5 minutes, sieve and drink.
For diarrhoea, dysentery and mucus in stool
Rub a piece of sonth to make a fine paste. In a small thick-bottom small pot, take 2 teaspoons of sonth paste, add 2 teaspoons of grated jaggery and 2 teaspoons of homemade pure ghee. Heat on low flame until it is cooked properly. Give the patient this mixture to lick, bit by bit, for relief.
For joint pain in case of arthritis or even rheumatism
Make small balls (like the size of a betel nut) prepared from 1 part of sonth powder, 2 parts of grated jaggery and homemade pure ghee (as much as required to roll the balls). When taken everyday in the morning this will help to relieve the pain and inflammation and to balance the Vata dosha in the body.
