Any traditional, sumptuous Indian meal is not complete without at least one spicy, tasty, appetising and tantalising mix – the Chutney. Usually, Indian chutneys are made with fresh herbs, spices, seeds and nuts. They not only stimulate the taste buds but also aid in digestion. A chutney adds zing and a little drama to any meal, whether it is a snack or complete Indian thali. Chutneys come in various forms. It could be a dip, or a paste or in a dry form. Our recipe today falls in the last category.
Sesame seeds, though tiny in size, are loaded with health benefits. Ayurveda endorses sesame oil as the best for external application to keep the body young and healthy. Sesame seeds are agni vardhak, i.e. they stimulate the digestive fire. They pacify the Vata and Kapha doshas and increase Pitta dosha slightly. They are a natural source of calcium and thus are good for the bones. They are rich in anti-oxidants and help to maintain the health of hair, teeth and the skin. The coconut added to this recipe balances the chutney with its cooling effect. This flavourful and versatile sesame chutney can be used as a bread spread or with butter on chapati/paratha or on khakra with ghee. It can be used in sandwiches or as a part of the main meal. One can even mix the chutney with curd to make a tasty dip or spread.
