Relish This Protein Packed and Delicious Recipe – Dal Tandurust!

Dal is a dish that has infinite variations. Every region in India has a number of yummy dal recipes. Dal is a rich source for protein, apart from other essential nutrients. Easy to cook, easy to digest, delicious and essential, dal is a core food that suits all climates and constitutions. We hope you enjoy the classic recipe given below. We call it Dal Tandurust (hearty)!

Preparation Time: 60 mins
Serves approx: 8-10 people

Ingredients

  • 100 gms Masur Dal
  • 100 gms Mung Dal
  • 20 gms Chickpea Dal/Chana Dal
  • 20 gms Udid Dal
  • 1 lt Hot Water
  • 40 gms Ghee
  • 2 gm Cumin /Jeera (whole grain)
  • 2 gm Turmeric Powder / Haldi
  • 1 gm Hing / Asafoetida
  • 8 pcs Curry Leaves/ Kadhipatta
  • 2 gms Red Chili Powder
  • 16 gms Ginger Paste
  • 7 gms Garlic (crushed)
  • 10 gms Lemon Juice
  • 17 gms Salt
  • 10 gms Coriander – fresh leaves cut finely for garnishing

Preparation:

  1. Wash all four dals and keep them ready.
  2. Heat the ghee in a thick-bottomed pot (or pressure cooker). Add the whole grain jeera, hing powder, haldi, kadhipatta, crushed garlic, ginger paste and red chilli powder, one after the other.
  3. Add all the dals to the pot together and roast for 2-3 min till an aroma develops. Add the hot water and salt. Simmer without a lid till the liquid in the pot reduces to half. Then cover the pot and cook for about 20 min until the dals are soft. (this normally happens in one pressure cooker whistle, or 8 to 10 minutes in a pot on a slow flame.)
  4. Before serving, add the lemon juice and garnish with the finely cut coriander.
  5. Dal is one of the most versatile foods in the world and can be eaten with rice, chapati or bread. This particular preparation, Dal Tandurust, is a protein packed and nutritious recipe that can be eaten often, and has a rich flavour that is impressive even when entertaining guests!
