Energy is the key to all life activities and this kriya helps the performer to acquire exactly this. In today’s times of high performance stress in every facet of life, this kriya is your to-go daily yoga ritual. Though one may perform this kriya at any time of the day, it is best performed in the early morning hours, just around sunrise. This is the time when the maximum cosmic energy radiates from the sun into the atmosphere. Performing the Shaktikarshan kriya helps to attract this pranic energy during inhalation and this is extremely beneficial for health.
Shaktikarshan recharges the lungs, balances the thyroid activity, supports detoxification and strengthens the nervous system. It also straightens the spine and activates kidney and liver functions.
1) Begin by sitting in Vajrasana
2) Spread the fingers and place the fingertips on the ground, just in front of the knees, slightly wider than shoulder distance.
Curve the fingers, as if placing them over an imaginary ball, and press the fingertips firmly against the ground. Look straight ahead while keeping the arms and spine in a straight line.
3) Open the eyes and mouth wide, without placing any strain on the facial muscles. You can imagine a python attracting its prey.
4) Slowly inhale and exhale several times through the mouth, with steady pressure, thus creating a hissing sound – like the waves of the ocean. The abdomen should move in while exhaling and out with inhaling. Keep the fingertips pressed against the ground.
5) After completing the kriya, rest the hands on the knees and breathe normally through the nose before beginning the next kriya.
